I’ve been reading a book called “Willow” by Julia Hoban, and so far I’ve
been enjoying it a lot. It’s about a 16-year old girl named Willow who had a
tragic accident 6 months ago. She out at dinner with her parents and since they
were a little under the influence they decided that Willow should drive,
unfortunately she got into an accident and both her parents were killed. Since
then she can never let go of the guilt of her parent’s death and the loss of
them, so to cope with this she starts to cut herself. The fact that after the
accident her older brother doesn't even speak to her anymore makes her inner
guilt and grief worse. She thinks that the only way for her to have some relief
from the pain is by cutting her wrist and no notices what she’s doing to
herself. So far that’s all that I know from the chapters that I’ve read.
My personal reaction to this was that I think a lot of
people cut themselves because they feel that that’s their last resort when they
have no one else to go to. I use to have a friend who did that to herself
because of problems she was having at home and I tried helping and getting help
for her but she wouldn’t let me and would always she’s fine and top it off with
a smile. I think the authors intent in this story was to make some teens
realize that there’s always someone willing to help you if need it but only if
you’ll let them.
